Description

This award is given annually to recognize a faculty member who demonstrates compelling and significant impact in areas related to affordable and open educational resources. Through open education, students have access to low- or no-cost materials in place of high-cost textbooks, thus reducing student debt. This reduces barriers to education and opens up more information to all of society. 

Eligibility

All current tenure track or non-tenure track faculty (individuals, not teams).

Selection Criteria

Examples of impact include (but are not limited to): 

  • Adopting or adapting free course texts;
  • Providing free electronic notes or textbook alternatives;
  • Using or incorporating free educational resources or materials in classes;
  • Using or incorporating existing library subscribed- or owned-resources in classes;
  • Creating OER;
  • Publicly sharing OER through ScholarWorks or o ther scholarly repository; 
  • Championing the goal of making use of free and affordable educational resources beyond the faculty member’s own classroom (e.g., presentations, publications, coordinating use of an OER across multiple courses or sections of courses).
  • Adopting open pedagogy for co-creation of course curricula and materials with students.

 Nomination Materials Required

Faculty, administrators, students and others who are knowledgeable about the individual’s engagement in open education are invited to submit nominations online. Please provide the nominee’s name, department, and a brief statement as to why you feel your nominee should receive this award. Individuals who are nominated for this award will be contacted later for more information. 

Application Process

Every nominated faculty member will be informed of their nomination and will be provided with instructions for submitting their application materials. Nominees who choose to accept the nomination will be required to provide the selection committee with the following:

  • Evidence of open education practices.
  • Nominees will be asked to address the quantity, quality, and impact of their open education practices in a brief statement.
